We come now to the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, a contrast of two men before God, and for those that first heard it, a stunning contrast of who was really right with God. The straightforward purpose of this parable is to cause anyone who hears it to ask, “On what basis do I stand before God and consider myself right with God?"
